Indonesian President Joko Widodo has made his first official trip since being sworn in last week, visiting refugees displaced by volcanic eruptions from Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra. During the visit with the First Lady Iriana, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo instructed all related institutions to speed up the relocation of the Mount Sinabung evacuees in Karo regency, North Sumatra.

Data from the Karo administration showed there were 370 families, a total of 1,116 people, that need to be relocated. They came from the three subdistricts of Bekerah, Sukameriah and Simacem, which were all located in the hazard zone within a radius of three kilometers of the volcano. Responding to a question regarding the fate of the evacuees currently staying in evacuation centers, Jokowi said he had handed to each family aid in the form of Rp 500,000 in cash, plus a package of staple foods. The evacuees would also receive Smart Cards, family welfare cards and Healthy Indonesia cards.

“In two weeks the three cards will be delivered to all the evacuees. If any of them do not receive one, please text me,” said Jokowi while sharing his cell phone number with the evacuees.

Beside SIM Cards, Jokowi also wants relocation of evacuees accelerated. The President has ordered the forestry minister to issue permits to convert 450 hectares of forest land into a resettlement area and construct a road leading to the resettlement area. The Karo district administration will construct the road with the assistance of the National Defense Forces members, he remarked. "The construction of the road will cost Rp10 billion, which will come from the on-call fund of the National Disaster Mitigation Board (BNPB). Meanwhile, the rehabilitation and reconstruction project will cost Rp1.3 trillion," he pointed out.

As Jokowi held a meeting few days earlier with former National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction (TNP2K) secretary Bambang Widianto and Bank Mandiri president director Budi Gunadi Sadikin to discuss methods of disbursing financial aid to the evacuees. “The President wants a different mechanism to distribute [financial aid], which will use SIM cards that can be used with or without cell phones. The funds can be withdrawn through post offices and agents such as Indomaret [minimarkets],” Bambang said after the meeting at the presidential compound.

Those three cards categorized as Magnetic Stripe card which are "Kartu Indonesia Sehat" (Indonesia Health Cards - more like insurance card), "Kartu Indonesia Pintar" (Indonesia Smart Cards - for books and education facitlity distribution) and "Kartu Keluarga Sejahtera (Family Werfare Cards, for daily help life)", and all Card distributed among the victims of the volcanic eruption.
